What to Do After You Get Engaged
You just got engaged. 🎉💍
First of all — congratulations!!!! Seriously such a fun season of life to be in!!
That moment is exciting, emotional, and but can honestly quickly feel a little overwhelming. And once the excitement settles, most couples start asking the same question:
Okay… now what?
After photographing hundreds of weddings, I’ve walked alongside a lot of couples in this exact season. So if you’re newly engaged and feeling a little unsure where to start, here’s my honest advice!
First — slow down and enjoy it!
Before you jump straight into planning mode, give yourself permission to just be engaged for a bit.
Tell your people. Celebrate. Soak it in.
You don’t need to have everything figured out immediately — even if it feels like everyone expects you to.
This season goes by quickly. Let yourself enjoy it, even if the engagement season has to last a little longer!

Talk through the big picture together
Before booking anything, sit down and talk about what matters most to both of you.
Not Pinterest-perfect details — the big stuff. Honestly maybe stay off of Pinterest until you are on the same page about some things, haha!
What kind of day do you actually want?
Big celebration or something more intimate?
Where do you imagine getting married?
What feels realistic budget-wise?
Getting on the same page early makes every decision after this so much easier!

Set a budget — and priorities
One of the most important things to do after you get engaged is talk honestly about budget.
Instead of starting with exact numbers, start with priorities.
What matters most to you?
What are you okay spending less on?
What do you want to remember when the day is over?
For a lot of couples, photography becomes a big priority — because once the day is over, your photos are what you’ll have to relive it.

Choose a date or season
You don’t need everything booked yet, but having a general timeframe helps.
Spring, summer, fall, or winter?
Any meaningful dates?
Family or travel considerations?
Even narrowing it down to a season gives you direction moving forward.

Start looking at venues
Your venue affects almost everything — your guest count, timeline, flow of the day, and even how your photos look.
When touring venues, pay attention to things like:
- natural light
- outdoor photo spots
- where you’ll get ready
- how the day will flow from one space to another
Choosing the right venue early makes planning feel way less overwhelming.

Book a photographer you trust 🙂
This is one decision couples often wish they hadn’t waited on.
Your photographer is with you for most of your wedding day — guiding you, calming nerves, adjusting timelines, and capturing moments you’ll never get back.
When choosing a photographer, look deeper than just their insta grid and price point…
- Ask to see full galleries
- Read reviews
- Make sure you actually connect with them
When you trust your photographer, you can relax and trust that your memories are a priority!

Don’t skip engagement photos
Engagement photos aren’t just about having cute pictures for Instagram– but that is definitely a plus!!
They help you get comfortable in front of the camera.
You learn how your photographer poses and get to know them so you can walk into your wedding day feeling confident instead of awkward!
So many of our couple tell me they’re so glad they didn’t skip this step!

Start thinking about your timeline
You don’t need every detail planned yet, but it’s helpful to understand how timing affects your day so you know what you are looking for in a photography package. Most of our couples are happy with 8-10 hours of photography coverage, just for reference!
Think about things like:
- ceremony time
- sunset photos
- buffer time
- where you’re getting ready
A realistic timeline leads to calmer days, less stress, and better photos!
If you’re newly engaged and feeling overwhelmed, here’s the most important thing to remember:
You don’t have to do everything at once.
Take things step by step. Make intentional decisions. Surround yourself with vendors you trust.
And most importantly — enjoy this season. It goes faster than you think!!
If you’re still looking for guidance or a photographer to walk alongside you through the process, I’d love to connect!!
