Are you dreaming of working for yourself but have no idea where to start? Here are some practical things to do to get started.
- Find what you are passionate about.
Owning a business is HARD. There is no one to keep you accountable but yourself. You don’t clock in and clock out. Your success depends on you. So before you get your business license and set up a photography Facebook page and call yourself a photographer because you bought a camera and you envy the life on Katelyn James or Amy and Jordan Demos who seem to take photos once a month and make millions… make sure you are choosing what you are passionate enough about in order to be successful.
2. Be confident.
This is SO important. If you want to make money taking photos, you have to believe in yourself and make others believe and see the value in what you are doing. If you book a paying gig as a musician, and you show up and hide behind the mic and don’t make eye contact because you do not think you are good enough, you are not going to go far. So believe in yourself! I firmly believe in the whole “fake it ’til you make it” philosophy. Make sure you appear even more confident than you are; because if you aren’t confident in what you are selling, I can guarantee no one is going to be confident investing in what you are selling.
3. Be consistent.
If you are going to make soaps, then be the best soap-maker and show up every day telling people about how great your soaps are. Don’t show up on social media and announce you make soaps one day, and then not share any more info until weeks later. Show up over and over again so that you are constantly in someone’s mind, so when they need that hand-made lavender soap they know exactly who to come to and where to find you!
